1. Connection Methods of Hydraulic Cylinders

The cylinder tube is the main body of a hydraulic cylinder. Its two ends are connected to the cylinder head and the cylinder bottom, forming a sealed pressure chamber. The connections between the cylinder tube and the head/bottom can be made via methods such as threaded connection, key connection, flange connection, tie rod connection, or welding. 2. Welded Cylinders

In welded hydraulic cylinders, the rear cover is welded directly onto the cylinder tube, and the oil port is also welded onto the tube. The front cover is usually secured to the cylinder tube using threads or bolts.

Welded cylinders are characterized by a narrower main body and a relatively short overall length, allowing them to fit more closely within the constraints of mechanical designs.

Advantages:

-Smaller external dimensions.

-High strength, capable of withstanding certain impact loads.

-Customizable features such as special oil port designs, unique installation methods, or the addition of locking valves.


Disadvantages:

-Welding can easily lead to deformation of the cylinder tube.

-Difficult to repair—the welded design makes disassembly relatively challenging, and in some cases, the end cover must be damaged to remove the cylinder.


3. Tie Rod Cylinders

Tie rod hydraulic cylinders use tie rods (or threaded rods) to secure the cylinder head and the cylinder bottom together. These tie rods run the full length of the cylinder tube, and bolts are used to fix the bottom plate and the head together.

Depending on the operating pressure, the tie rods may be made from different materials. Tie rod cylinders typically feature static seals to prevent leakage at the interface between the cylinder tube and the end covers.

Advantages:

-Good manufacturability and wide applicability.

-Easy assembly and disassembly, which facilitates maintenance.

-Mostly standardized products—parts can be mass-produced, and semi-finished or finished products are generally kept in stock, ensuring shorter delivery times.


Disadvantages:

-The end covers are relatively large and heavy; under load, the tie rods may elongate, which can compromise the sealing effectiveness. This makes them suitable mainly for medium and low-pressure applications.

-Limited customization options.

-Generally less durable compared to welded cylinders.


4. How to Choose Between Tie Rod and Welded Cylinders

The best solution is the one that best suits the application. Both tie rod and welded cylinders have their own advantages and disadvantages, so the selection must be based on the specific working conditions.


Choose Tie Rod Hydraulic Cylinders When:

-There is sufficient installation space.

-Effective maintenance and repair are required.

-The application operates under low pressure.

-Budget constraints favor a lower-priced product.


Choose Welded Hydraulic Cylinders When:

-Installation space is limited.

-High-quality sealing is required.

-The application operates under high pressure and requires higher durability and load capacity.

-Special oil port configurations are needed or there is a requirement to install hydraulic locks, balancing valve blocks, or other specialized components.
